Physical education in the city Vs Virtual Education in the Countryside

If you are used to the city maybe this article of my blog can be a little surprising for you... studying in the countryside is not that peaceful as how many people can tell, changing from going to the campus and then stay at your place 24/7 is something really weird at first.

In my other article "What it's like to represent students virtually on a pandemic battlefield", I explained in some words how was all the institutional change and that I had to kept in mind lots of cases that needed a solution. When the EAFIT University communicate us that all the classes would be virtual, I was in my house were I live with my family, despite our place is not small and are enough space for all of us to feel comfortable it was a disaster the idea of not going out. 2 days after I moved of place.

My parents are divorced and I moved with my dad at his place that is located in the countryside, more exactly in eastern Antioquia or what is called Oriente Antioqueño. The idea to be outside, that I could walk and feel the grass felt really nice, I felt less anxious, it did not felt like it was the end of the world.

When classes started again virtually I still was in my dad house, but not everything could be enjoyable... I had lots of connection issues and was very stressful and was very noisy to study because of my family, personal space was not respected. Waking up everyday was a different experience and for classes of 6 A.M was a nightmare because was very cold. Every time that I ended a class I went outside and at evenings I played with my dad table games.

Some days were worst than others, I had to study with my data plan of my phone... Is not an experience that I recommend and I had to be absence from a few classes! see the recorded classes was another level of virtual classes experience because sometimes were not well recorded. I used to remember old days at campus and the opportunity to be with my friends, be in the office of the student group or even go to the bus station.

In the countryside all the regulations were not that strict and I used to hangout going to the market to buy some groceries and then back and disinfect all the plastic bags and the food... I started to enjoy those little actions - things, like watching movies with my dad, spent time with my pets, cooking and the video calls with my friends. At the end I only spent 1 month at my dad house because one day a big storm happened and a tree fall besides my father's house and the phone and internet services failed completely.  Surprisingly, I missed the city but I was aware that my life would still be boring there but anyways I wanted to see my mother and also order some food like a pizza or something to share with her and watch a movie, so moved back again.

I have to recognize that both are different lifestyles and they have their advantages and disadvantages, but study at the countryside personally for me was a little complicated because of the connection issues and I missed some classes... I really missed the classrooms because sometimes I could not focus on the lectures, but it was something on adaptation and by now I think that I managed the situation very well.

I would like to know about your experience! leave your comments below. :)

What were the things that you missed the most at the extreme lockdown?

Your family disturb your personal space with the noise?

Could you focus on the lectures?

  3. I am really glad to have the opportunity of reading about your experience. It is really sad the conditions in which many people living in the country side have been found, especially during this pandemic. Complementing your idea about lack of internet connection, I cannot believe that in our country, Colombia, over 62% of the population does not have a stable internet connection and connectivity is only available in the country side to 6,2%. This is a huge problem, especially since quarantine forced us to stay home and lead to solving (for those who are lucky enough to have a stable internet connection) problems virtually. Many people were forced to leave school due to lack of it, therefore, rising educational inequality, which could later be transformed into rises of poverty.
